The City of Collinsville would like to extend a special congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic John Canull. He has been selected as Firefighter of the Month for January 2013. Please see his nomination below:
I am writing to recommend Firefighter John Canull for Firefighter on the Month. Firefighter Canull is the kind of employee that makes the Collinsville Fire Department successful in its mission to provide superior public service. Whether it is his friendly, enthusiastic approach to even the most mundane task, his professionalism at a fire scene, or his exemplary patient treatment as a paramedic, John is the kind of employee that leaves a lasting positive impression on his co-workers and the citizens he proudly serves. Although he still may be considered a “rookie” in a job, based on teamwork, his high degree of energy, commitment, flexibility, and professional conduct make him stand out among his peers.
Recently Firefighter Canull was involved in an off-duty medical incident at local health club. While working out he noticed a growing commotion near one of the treadmills. John noticed an unresponsive man lying on his side. Firefighter Canull quickly recognized the signs of cardiac arrest and calmly directed staff personnel to call 911 and to bring the automatic external defibrillator (AED). With the help of another bystander, John was able to begin effective CPR and used the AED to deliver a shock to the patient. The shock reset the pumping action of his heart and the patient was conscious and attempting to sit up before the EMS crew arrived. His quick and decisive actions saved a life.
Firefighter Canull exemplifies the type of personnel who give so much to the success of our department, and I am proud to nominate him to be recognized as Firefighter of the Month.
